Please help the Third grade and the PTA as they collect items for the SPCA of Northern Nevada. They are receiving donations of leashes, collars, chew toys, treats, cat and dog food, brushes, cat litter, and metal bowls. Please have all donations in by October 26th.

PTA Fall Festival is Thursday, October 27th at the Elementary School (Main Campus) from 3:30 – 7:30 pm. All families are invited! This is a family event that we hope you can enjoy with your child, so each student must have a parent/grandparent/caregiver accompany him/her in order to attend. If you have arranged for another parent to supervise your child, please let your teacher know. We will have normal After-School Care hours (3:00-6:00 PM) this day if you and your child cannot attend the event. Regular Dress Code is required for the school day at the Elementary and Middle Schools. Parents can bring costumes with them at dismissal time for their children to change into before Fall Festival (Middle School students can bring their costumes with them and change after last period). TLC students may come to school in their costumes for the all-school costume parade. Please bring a change of clothes.

If you have any great pictures of school events that you take throughout the school year, we would love to have them for our yearbook (it's never too early for us to start working on it)! If you took any shots during the first day of school, Friday assemblies, Jog or Trike-A-Thon, please send them to tdorey@brookfieldschool.com for Elementary and Middle Schools and mjacobson@brookfieldschool.com for TLC. You can also drop off a labelled USB storage device (we will return it to you). We will definitely be looking for Fall Festival pics from all of our families. Thanks in advance for sharing!

What We Are Learning!
We have jumped into fall here at TLC and we are just loving it! We are learning all about leaves, apples, pumpkins, and the changing of the seasons! We are enjoying festive cooking projects, art projects, and science projects that help us use all of our senses to learn about this fun-filled time of the year!

Trike-A-Thon
We had a wonderful Trike-A-Thon event here at TLC! All of our students had the best time! We would like to sincerely thank PTA for all of their hard work and support in putting on this event and and extra special thank you to Mrs. Simmi Sekhon for her hard work and helping us for the duration of the event! Additionally, we would like to say thank you to all of our wonderful families who came out and cheered on their Brookfield Bears!

Elementary CAMPUS/MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

If you are admiring the mums and pumpkins around the Elementary Campus, it is all THANKS the Douglas and Segrest families! Thank you for your flower and pumpkin donations, and for all of your time making the campus beautiful and ready for fall!

It is Chautauqua Season! Students will be performing their Chautauqua presentations in the classroom over the next three weeks. Ask your teacher for your child's Chautauqua schedule. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to come and watch the individual performances in the classroom. One student from each class will then be selected to perform at the All-School Chautauqua Assembly on Friday, November 4th.

BASKETBALL IS STARTING! Mr. Aitchison will be holding a parent meeting for anyone with a Fourth-Eighth grade child who is interested in playing basketball. Please join him THIS Friday, October 14th at 1:15 pm in Room #6 (this is the conference room directly across from the front office). Beginning next week, basketball practice will be every Monday and Wednesday from 3:45-5:00 pm in the Main Campus Great Room.

Wednesday, October 19th is Fall Portrait Make-Up Day for elementary and middle school students. If your child was absent on September 28th, please ensure he/she is in Wednesday Dress Uniform on this day.

Brookfield School will be participating in the Great Nevada Shakeout on Thursday, October 20th. At 10:20 am on 10/20, our students will be practicing what to do in the event of an earthquake. The goal of the Great Shakeout is to teach students the importance of earthquake preparedness and how to stay safe and calm in an actual earthquake. For more information, visit – http://www.shakeout.org/nevada/

Chinese Language Students and 1st – 3rd Grade students enrolled in Violin class will be performing on Friday, October 21st immediately following Friday assembly, approximately 9:00 AM. Come watch the students show off their skills!

We are dismissing from the classrooms this day from 3:00-3:15 and 3:30-3:45 for the specific grades. Students remaining after the first fifteen minutes will be sent to After-School care in the Great Room.

Brookfield Middle School has started a Get It Together Mathematics Lab. Ms. Leonard will be available to 5th – 8th grade students Monday through Thursday, from 3:40 – 4:40 pm. Students interested in having fun while improving in math are encouraged to join. Please see Ms. Brumley for cost information.

If your child brings a lunch from home that requires heating up, please label your containers. We have dozens of students who bring items requiring microwaving and they often forget what they bring. Labelling items will significantly reduce the amount of time students are waiting for their lunches and prevent students from eating others' lunches. This is especially important as we have students with food allergies. Please also note that lunches requiring more than 2 minutes of heating will be held until all other lunches are warmed. The lunch staff thanks you for your cooperation! Look at this great example!

We make every attempt to accommodate children with special dietary needs, as well as to provide healthy treats for all of our children. To help us accomplish this goal, we would like to suggest an alternative to sugary birthday treats. Some suggestions might be a party favor, an arts and craft project, or a donation of a favorite book to the classroom or library in your child's name. Healthy treats such as a fruit or veggie tray might also be considered. Before planning birthday recognition, please check with the teacher as it will be scheduled during the last few minutes of the day.

As you plan your holiday travel schedule, please note that our holiday calendar differs from Washoe County. We are in session Monday through Wednesday of Thanksgiving Week (November 21st-23rd), with full days Monday and Tuesday, and a 12:00 pm dismissal on Wednesday, November 23rd. Schools are closed Thursday and Friday of that week. Our Winter Break is Monday, December 19th to Friday, December 30th, returning to school on Monday, January 2nd. Winter Vacation Camp will be available.

PTA NEWS

Chautauqua Costume Drive: Donate your old Chautauqua costumes to Brookfield PTA now! Buy a new costume from PTA until Friday, October 28th! We will be located at the front gate on Mondays from 8:00 am to 9:00 am and outside of the Great Room on Fridays for Assembly from 8:00 am – 9:00 am. Come and see what you can find!

After this Friday, October 14th, Popcorn Fridays will no longer be selling ice cream or popsicles. We will be serving popcorn, Smencils, and lemonade or hot chocolate (season-dependent). We thank you for your understanding. Halloween Smencils are here! Smencils are environmentally-friendly pencils made by rolling sheets of recycled newspaper tightly around #2 graphite writing cores. They are then hardened, soaked with gourmet liquid scents, and fitted with erasers. Each Smencil comes in its own corn-based biodegradable Freshness Tube. Spooky Smencils then have a cute little topper to seal in the spookiness! Halloween Smencils are $1 each and they come in five spooktacular scents: Slime Lime, Trick or Treat, Monster Marsh, Pumpkin Panic, and Grape Goblin. They are on sale at Friday Baristas and Friday Popcorn.

If you are interested in helping out at the Fall Festival, joining the Library Committee, or volunteering for any upcoming events, please see Mr. Sherven or Ms. Apollon (their contact information is below)! They would love your help!
