Last week, Mrs. Bratt’s and Mrs. Post’s classes visited Urban Roots, a local working farm with a mission of teaching students that the world where they live is abundant with healthy food, rich soil, and deep relationships with each other and the land. Thank you to our parent chaperones, as well as to the PTA Enrichment Committee for sponsoring this amazing field trip. This was truly one of the best field trips we have ever had! Art / Invention / Science Night

There is an exciting event coming up for all of Elementary and Middle School in which your Brookfield student will be participating. All families are invited to join us for our “Art, Invention, and Science Night” on Thursday, March 22nd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Brookfield’s Annual Expo combines many skills your child learns at Brookfield. All students will be displaying their inventions or science experiments and reports. Mrs. Reid is also joining this wonderful night, and the students will be displaying their artwork. The event will take place at both the Elementary and Middle School campuses. Artwork, wine, and refreshments will be in our Art Gallery at Middle School, and the inventions and science projects will be at the Elementary School.

Classes who chose to do inventions will become junior inventors, expanding their creative problem solving skills by creating their own inventions. The inventions are created to solve every day problems. Problem solving skills are vital in today’s world. The invention process helps students develop these skills at an early age.

Other classes have chosen to explore the scientific process by running their own experiments. The students have already begun working on their experiments and will be presenting their findings. Look for information coming home from your student which will explain the step-by-step guide to creating his or her own invention or science experiment. Please go over this information with your child to make sure you, your child, and your child’s teacher are on the same agenda regarding timelines, expectations, and deadlines. If you have any questions, we recommend you ask your student’s teacher for clarification as early as possible.

Your support and encouragement are necessary for a successful completion of this project. However, these inventions, reports, and experiments are to be completed by the students. We ask parents to allow their children to own all facets of the project and help only when adult supervision is necessary. Remember, some of the best ideas come from what may at first seem like a silly concept to an adult, but is of serious concern to a child! The projects which garner the most attention and consideration at the expo are the ones clearly assembled by the students, and little imperfections and improvising is expected. If you make a model, it does not have to work.

Each student will submit a three-sided display board except Pre1st and 4th Grade. Pre-1st will present on one board and 4th Grade projects are provided by the school on life-size sheets of paper. We have a limited supply of science boards for sale in the office for your convenience of $5.00 each. These boards can also be purchased at Target, Wal-Mart, and Michael’s.

Please feel free to ask us if you have any further questions. We hope your child really gets into the creation of his or her invention or science experiment. These projects can be fun and full of learning not just for your child, but also for the entire household! We hope you can join us on Thursday, March 22nd, but we ask that you please leave your display boards at school for everyone else to enjoy for the remainder of the evening.
