MAIN CAMPUS/MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

I Students are hard at work on their science experiments and inventions in preparation for the Annual Brookfield Science Invention Expo / Open House. The Expo will be held at Middle School on Tuesday, March 15th from 5:00-6:30 pm. All students will be displaying their inventions or science experiments and reports. This special Expo combines many of the skills your child has been learning at Brookfield School. Please see below for more details. We will be holding an Open House at Middle School during the event, so join us for refreshments and tours of the Middle School campus. Bring a friend! The Middle School is located at 6778 S. McCarran Blvd.

Join us on Friday, March 18th following the morning assembly as Mrs. Friedlander presents Holiday Songs for the Classroom. The second grade classes have been rehearsing for their moment under the bright lights of the Great Room stage! We hope you can join us.

All Pre-1st through 2nd Grade students will join our 3rd and 4th grade violinists at the Friday assembly on March 25th for a violin performance! Parents are encouraged to come and watch these budding musicians take to the stage! Assembly begins at 8:30 am in the Main Campus Great Room.

Save the Date: We will be having optional, free-dress and sibling Spring Portraits and Eighth Grade Cap & Gown Portraits on Thursday, April 7th in the morning hours. Please note, this is the Thursday of the week we return from Spring Break. We will not have a make-up day for the Spring Portraits or for the Eighth Grade class portrait, so please try to schedule appointments around this date if possible. Forms will go home prior to Spring Break and should be returned before Spring Break as well.

We are very proud to announce that Brookfield School has received the rights to the award-winning musical production of The Lion King. This will be the full school production, including the music, props, and scenery (which means there will also be plenty of art time with Ms. Reid!). We welcome all future superstars and artistic geniuses to the auditions. More information will come, but this is a full summer course from Week 1 to Week 8 of Summer Camp, with a Middle School production for 4th – 8th grades, and a lower elementary production for Pre-1st – 3rd grade.

ENRICHMENT: We want to remind our PTA members that requests for enrichment funding for particular enrichment activities, whether by grade, class or school/campus wide, are not limited to coming from teachers. If you have an idea or would like to possibly coordinate a learning activity around your area of expertise, please inquire with Mindy Cannady, our Enrichment Chair.

Science & Invention Expo

All families are invited to join us at Middle School on Tuesday, March 15th from 5:00 – 6:30 pm for the Brookfield Science & Invention Expo and Open House. All students will be displaying their inventions or science experiments and reports throughout Main Campus. Brookfield's Annual Expo combines many skills your child learns at Brookfield.

Classes who chose to do inventions will become junior inventors, expanding their creative problem solving skills by creating their own inventions. The inventions are created to solve every day problems. Problem solving skills are vital in today's world. The invention process helps students to develop these skills at an early age.

Other classes have chosen to explore the scientific process by running their own experiments. The students have already begun working on their experiments and will be presenting their findings. Selected older students and classes will also be attending the Western Nevada Regional Science Fair On March 2nd and 3rd at the Reno/Sparks Livestock Events Center Exhibit Hall (please note: this is a new venue this year). Please support them by attending the science fair at the Reno/Sparks Livestock Events Center. For more information, see their website at www.nevadasciencefair.net.

Look for information coming home from your student, which will explain the step-by-step guide to creating his or her own inventions or science experiment. Please go over this information with your child to make sure you, your child, and your child's teacher are on the same agenda regarding timelines, expectations, and deadlines for his/her project. If you have any questions, we recommend you ask your student's teacher for clarification as early as possible.

Your support and encouragement are necessary for a successful completion of this project, but these inventions, reports, and experiments are to be completed by the students. We ask parents to allow their children to own all facets of the project and help only when adult supervision is necessary. Remember, some of the best ideas come from what may at first seem like a silly concept to an adult, but is of serious concern to a child. The projects which garner the most attention and consideration at the expo are the ones clearly assembled by the students, and little imperfection and improvising is expected.

Each student will submit a three-sided display board. On the back of this letter you will find a sample layout of the display board. We will have a limited supply of science board for sale in the office for you convenience of $5.00 each. These boards can be purchased at Target, Wal-Mart, and Michael's.

Please feel free to ask us if you have any further questions. We hope your student really gets into the creation of his or her invention or science experiment. These projects can be fun and full of learning not just for your child, but also for the entire household!
