ACCELERATED READER

What is Accelerated Reader™ (AR)?

AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. AR is designed to improve comprehension and vocabulary while motivating children to read.

How does AR work at Brookfield School?

Teachers determine each student’s reading level through a STAR Reading™ test along with his/her best professional judgment based on his/her knowledge of the student. The student picks a book at his/her reading level to read. After finishing the book, the student takes a short quiz on the computer at school. AR provides students and teachers feedback based on the quiz results.

Vacation awards program

What is a STAR Reading™ test?

STAR Reading™ is a computerized reading assessment test that uses multiple-choice questions that continually adjust to the student’s responses. If the student’s response is correct, the difficulty level is increased. If the student misses a question, the difficulty level is decreased. After taking a STAR Reading test, the student receives a reading grade level range called a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). ZPD is the range of books that will challenge a student without causing frustration or loss of motivation. Students are encouraged to read books at the lower level of the ZPD to experience success. Once the lower range is mastered, the students are encouraged to move up to the middle range of the ZPD, and then to the upper range of the ZPD.

What is a book level?

Book levels represent the difficulty of the text. For example, a book level of 4.5 means that the text could likely be read independently by a student whose reading skills are at the level of a typical fourth grader during the fifth month of school. The content of the book, however, may or may not be appropriate. The corresponding interest level will give you a recommendation of the appropriateness of the content.

What is an Interest Level?

To help choose the books most appropriate for the students, AR quizzes are divided into four Interest Levels: Lower Grades (K-3), Middle Grades (4-8), Middle Grades Plus (6 and up), and Upper Grades (9-12). The Interest Levels are based on the recommendations of the publisher and/or literary book reviews by professional organizations. However, the final decision on whether the content of a book is appropriate for a particular student is left to the parents.

What are AR points?

Every book that has an AR Reading Practice Quiz is given a point value. AR points are computed based on the difficulty of the book (i.e., book level) and the length of the book (i.e., number of words). Students earn points (or a portion of a book’s points) depending on how well they do on the quiz.

What are the Brookfield AR Certification Levels and Criteria?

In order to motivate students to read, Brookfield has established AR Certification Levels and Criteria. Students receive certificates for satisfying the criteria for each level. For the first two levels (Emerging Reader and Ready Reader), the student may read any AR books and the books may be Read To or Read With the student. For subsequent levels, the student must independently read books at a required book level. The required book level must be within a student’s current ZPD for the student to be eligible for certification.

How do I know if a book has an AR quiz?

There are more than 150,000 AR Reading Practice Quizzes currently available. Additional quizzes are added each week. The Brookfield School library has organized and labeled the books in its collection that have AR quizzes. For books in your personal collection or at the public library, visit the AR BookFinder™ at www.arbookfind.com to conduct a search of all available books with AR quizzes. You may conduct an “Advanced Search” to generate book lists based on selected criteria such as book level, points, topic, interest level, fiction/nonfiction, etc.

How will I know how my child is doing?

You can access your child’s AR information through Renaissance Place Home Connect from any computer with Internet access. With Home Connect you and your student can:

  • View results of the last quiz taken and overall progress in reading (Note: the Brookfield Certification Levels and Criteria are unique and do not follow the certifications and goals you may see in Home Connect)
  • Find books that have Accelerated Reader quizzes (click here for link to AR BookFinder)
  • View My Bookshelf that shows the books on which quizzes have been taken
  • E-mail notification of results of AR quizzes taken by the student
